Cartography and GIS Department

Background:

Cartography Department (CARD) was established in May 1994 to fulfill the following main tasks:
1.      Produce different types of maps which are used in surveys and censuses.
2.      Prepare and develop a comprehensive listing of all Palestinian localities.
3.      Number the building to be used in survey samples and in censuses.

During the period 2003-2005 CARD tasks were developed and expanded to meet the development in the technology of producing maps and publishing statistical data. GIS was used in cartography and in producing statistical maps.

The first statistical atlas of Palestine was produced in 2004. Two projects concerning GIS were launched in 2004. These projects are a dynamic statistical atlas on the web site and establishing a geographical database covering all statistical data collected by PCBS. Consequently the name of the department was changed in January 2006 to become Cartography and GIS Department.
